Meeting Notes: Dog Park, Proposed Cell Tower, New City Hall

Updates and concerns discussed at recent City Council work session.

Here are a few items from the agenda and from public comments at the recent City Council work session in the City of Stone Mountain:

Dog Park

Some city residents who live near the dog park expressed frustration with noise, parking, pet owners and their dogs walking on private property, and other problems.

Among residents' suggestions to city leadership: relocating the park, and designate the area as green space.

At least one resident plans to document the problems and continue to inform the city's police department of violations.

The City Council recently approved new hours for the park: Nov. 1-March 31, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sundays and holidays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. From April 1-Oct. 31, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 9 a.m.m to 7 p.m.; Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Holidays are Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's and Easter.

Proposed Cell Tower

There was also a proposal for cell tower development at McCurdy Park. The plan involves a ground lease agreement between Municipal Communications, LLC and the City of Stone Mountain.

A representative for the developer said it would take up about 1/10 of an acre, with the possibility of needing to take down two trees. It would be about 944 feet from the playground.

One resident voiced concern about the proposal, citing research about birds dying around cell towers, and feral cats cleaning up the dead birds.

New City Hall

City manager Barry Amos said the primer is up on the walls, the ceiling grid is in, windows are being installed and other progress is being made on the new City Hall on Main Street. Carpet is set to go in next month.
