Meeting Notes: Health Insurance Renewal, Bridge Loan Approval, And New Building Kudos

The dog park controversy wasn't the only topic discussed at this week's Stone Mountain City Council Meeting.

While the were certainly the most spirited discussion at Tuesday's Stone Mountain city council meeting, the controversial space wasn't the only topic addressed.

Council members thanked all involved in getting the new municipal building at 875 Main Street prepared in time for the Feb. 7 regular business meeting.

The decor in the Earthcraft  building is mostly soft neutrals - grays, tans. A few  wooden benches from the old courthouse are in the new building.

A grand opening event is planned in the March-April time frame, mayor Pat Wheeler said.

Under new business, the council voted for the renewal of employee health insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield (Blue Choice 3802AX- HMO open access); renewal of employee dental insurance with Best Life; lease agreement between Georgia Municipal Association and City of Stone Mountain - a five year lease for computer equipment, amount financed, $19,059; and a bridge loan to the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) of $12,000 to cover the February 24 mortgage payment. In the last item, mayor pro tem Chakira Sallee, chairman of the DDA, abstained from voting.

DeKalb County Solicitor-General Sherry Boston was also in attendance at the meeting, reading a proclamation on Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month.

Also visiting was State Rep. Billy Mitchell, who once served as a council member and mayor pro tem in the City of Stone Mountain. "I didn't know how much I missed these council meetings until tonight," he said during remarks at the end of the meeting.
