Construction Underway for New Stone Mountain City Hall

United Grading began working on the site this week.

Prep work for the construction of Stone Mountain's new city hall got underway this week as United Grading worked on the drainage system and grading the site.

"We've just overjoyed we've got construction started," said City Manager Barry Amos.Β

City council this week approved at $1.68 million contract with Headley Construction Corp. to build the facility, which will also house the police department and the municipal court.

It's a year of big changes for the city. The historic train depot that now houses the three entities will become a visitor's center, a museum, and the offices of the Downtown Development Authority.

The DDA has already moved into temporary quarters in the Weatherly Building on the corner of Main and East Mountain, making way for the Georgia Military College, which will move into the annex building next to the library. Classes will begin there this fall.

"The school's moving along nicely," Amos said of the interior renovations underway.

A section of Second Street was closed briefly today as the crew worked on the drainage system. It will be closed again temporarily during one day next week, possibly Tuesday, Amos said, depending on the weather.
