City Council Members to be Elected by Post in November

Gov. Deal signed a bill last week that changes the way Stone Mountain city council members are elected.

Candidates running to fill three Stone Mountain city council seats in November's election will have to choose a post for which they will run after Gov. Deal signed a bill allowing for a change in the way council members are elected.

Richard Mailman was designated to hold council post 1; Cyril Mungal holds post 2, and Chakira Johnson Sallee holds post 3, according to the bill. Those are the three posts to be filled in the November ballot.

Under the previous charter, council seats were filled by the candidates with the most votes. The change brings Stone Mountain in line with most other cities, council member Steve Higgins said in February, when the council voted in favor of changing the election system.

The change doesn't create districts, City Manager Barry Amos said. It means only that contenders will vie directly against other candidates, not just for a seat on the council.

That “allow voters to decide whether they want that particular person on the council,” Higgins said after the council's February vote.

Susan Coletti was designated as holding post 4, Higgins, post 5; and Nan Nash holds post 6, according to the bill.
