Browns Mill Recreation Center in Lithonia Closes for Renovations

Lithonia recreation center expected to reopen in December

DeKalb County Parks and Recreation recently announced that the Browns Mill Recreation Center in Lithonia will be temporarily closing for a major renovation project.

Bernita Reese, the program manager for DeKalb Parks and Recreation, said that this was the first of two phases and described the details of the renovation: “The classrooms and gymnasium will be painted and they are closing in the front area of the recreation center to create a foyer in the lobby. The [contractors] will also replace the hardwood floors in the gymnasium, the ceiling tiles throughout the building and the front doors."

DeKalb County’s Chief Communications Officer, Burke Brennan, said that the county originally budgeted $600,000 for the renovations.  “The winning bid for the project comes in lower at $431,000 which constitutes a savings of $169,000’, Brennan said.

The Browns Mill Park, where the recreation center is located, had its playground and pavilion areas renovated in October 2010.  The 54-acre park features baseball and softball fields, a picnic area, tennis courts, and several walking trails.  The park also operates an aquatic center, equipped with a water slide, snack bar, and showers, during the summer season.  The aquatic center, which is located at 5101 Browns Mill Rd, is currently open on the weekends and will remain open until the last Saturday before Labor Day.
