Wife of Braves Trainer Killed in Atlanta Accident

Jeff Porter, others injured. The Gwinnett-area residents were hit by a Georgia State Patrol vehicle Saturday.

The wife of Atlanta Braves trainer Jeff Porter was killed Saturday afternoon in Atlanta when the car in which she and family members were riding was hit by a Georgia State Patrol cruiser, according to news reports.

Kathy Porter, 54, of Loganville was killed and her husband and son David, 19, were injured, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jeff Porter reportedly was driving the vehicle; the family was en route to the Chick-fil-A Bowl game when their Ford Expedition was hit at Capitol Avenue and Memorial Drive about 4:40 p.m.

A fourth passenger in the vehicle, Courtney Ann Williams, 18, of Grayson, was also injured. Their conditions were not immediately available.

A GSP captain at the scene told WSB-TV that the trooper was responding to assist with a chase on nearby I-20 when he struck the SUV which carried the Porters and Williams.

The Braves issued the following statement Saturday: "The Braves family is deeply saddened and shocked to learn about the tragic accident today involving the family of Head Athletic Trainer Jeff Porter and the death of his wife Kathy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jeff and Kathy’s family, their son David and all their friends and loved ones."

Fox 5 Atlanta reported that the cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office.
