[Video] Police Chief, Planning Official Discuss the Colony Apartments at Town Hall Meeting

The dilapidated apartment complex, shut down last summer, was brought up at DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis' town hall meeting Thursday.

The DeKalb County Chief of Police, William O'Brien, and the Associate Director of Planning for DeKalb, Andrew Baker, addressed the issue of the dilapidated Colony of Stone Mountain Apartment Homes off Hairston Road at CEO Burrell Ellis' Feb. 16 town hall meeting at St. Timothy United Methodist Church.

The Colony, in unincorporated Stone Mountain, has been the scene of a number of fires --  including a blaze in which no one was hurt Friday night, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution --  shootings, and other crimes. It was shut down last summer.

Henry, I wonder what would be the best way to re-purpose that land?
Henry Louis Adams February 19, 2012 at 09:44 PM
That is a huge piece of land. It would make a beautiful park with possibly a community center. Than again, some quality shops would be great there too. But the owner would need to sell it to someone that is willing to redevelop it or redevelop it themselves. It looks awful and dangerous to the public as it stands there.

Hi Jeff, thank you for your comment on this and related articles. Please note, this article was written and the comments were made long before Elul began renovations, so nobody's suggestions or speculations were about trying to stop work. The condition of The Colony has been a concern for many citizens for years.
