Stone Mountain Man Sentenced for 'Armed Robbery Rampage'

Laquan Smith was convicted last January of holding up multiple stores on Memorial Drive.

Laquan Smith, of Stone Mountain, was sentenced Tuesday to serve 18 years in federal prison to be followed by five years of supervised release, and fined $900.

Smith, 24, was convicted in January of robbing eight different local businesses during a three-week period in December 2011, taking a total of approximately $7,410.

"This defendant—who was already on state parole for armed robbery and on bond for burglary—went on an armed robbery rampage in the Memorial Drive area, going so far as to tie up his victims during three (of the) robberies,” said U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

The businesses he robbed included two Dollar General stores, three Family Dollar stores, a Pet Supermarket, an Orbit Video, and a Subway.

Troy Thomas, Smith’s co-defendant who participated in two of the robberies, was sentenced to 11 years, 2 months on April 29, 2013.
