Here is how the incident happened, according to a press release sent Friday afternoon from the sheriff's office:

A DeKalb County Sheriff’s Investigator confronted a would-be bank robber at 10:35 am today.  The investigator was in the bank conducting personal business. The attempted robbery at the Capital City Bank and Trust, 5674 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, was halted when the plain clothes investigator identified himself as a deputy and ordered the suspect to drop his gun.  When the suspect, identified as Eric D. Roberts, age 30, refused to comply with the investigator’s demands, the investigator fired.

Roberts attempted to flee by breaking and jumping through a bank window.  He made it to the outside drive-through banking area where he collapsed.  He was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital where he later died.  Roberts had just been in the DeKalb Jail charged with obstruction on December 11th.  He was released the same day. He was also arrested in DeKalb in October 2012 for a failure to appear charge and in May of this year on a loitering charge.

The officer’s name is not being released.  He will be placed on a routine paid leave for evaluations and then returned to work when he is administratively cleared.
