Police: No Reason for Worry in Man's Death Near Hambrick Elementary

DeKalb County Police are trying to determine if a man found dead near a school playground committed suicide or was shot by someone.

A college student found dead near the playground of Hambrick Elementary School was shot to death, police said, but area residents shouldn’t be concerned about public safety.

The body of Curtis Pinckney, 20, was found on the school campus near Stone Mountain early Sunday morning.

Detectives said they will soon determine how he died.

"We are looking at a homicide obviously, the potential, and also if the injury could have been possibly self-inflicted," Capt. Myron Logan of the DeKalb County Police Department told WSB TV.

Police wouldn't say whether there was a weapon at the scene.

Police responding to a 911 call of gunshots near Hambrick Elementary School early Sunday found Pinckney’s body near the school. Members of the victim’s family arrived at the scene Sunday and said that the man was a college student.

No matter what happened, police say Pinckney's life was cut short too soon.

"Unfortunately he was a young man who had his whole life ahead of him and it's just unfortunate this has occurred," Logan told WSB.

DeKalb County Schools are out of school this week for spring break, classes resume April 14.
