Mom Charged With Suffocating Toddler Remains in Jail

Meriel Kathleen Bemis, 21, of Stone Mountain remains in jail on a charge of murder in the death of her 3-year-old daughter.

A court hearing was postponed Friday for a 21-year-old DeKalb County mother charged with felony murder for allegedly suffocating her 3-year-old daughter.

Meriel Kathleen Bemis, 21, who reportedly lives in the Landmark at Mountain View Apartments near Stone Mountain, was arrested following the Feb. 23 death of her 3-year-old daughter.

The girl, Lela Bemis, was pronounced dead on arrival at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, after her mother’s boyfriend had called police. Merial Bemis reportedly told police she killed the child because she was upset over a break-up with her boyfriend, says the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
