Man Charged With Murder in Death of Policeman

Gregory Lee Harvey, charged with murder in the death of DeKalb County police officer Ivorie Klusmann, appeared in court Monday afternoon.

Harvey, 27, had been pulled over by Klusmann around 2 a.m. Saturday in Lithonia on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, but sped off during the traffic stop. A subsequent chase led to the death of the officer when his patrol car struck a tree near the intersection of DeKalb Medical Parkway and Heritage Park Trail.

DeKalb investigators arrested Harvey at his Stone Mountain residence later that day, and he is being charged with felony murder, reckless driving and theft by receiving a stolen vehicle.

FOX 5 is reporting that Harvey was awaiting trial as part of a federal probe into police corruption in metro Atlanta, and that several law enforcement officers were arrested. Harvey allegedly claimed to be a corrections officer who offered protection to cocaine dealers.

While Harvey appeared in court Monday, DeKalb County Interim CEO Lee May ordered flags at all county buildings to be lowered to half staff until Friday morning in memory of Officer Klusmann.
