Inside The Police Reports

It's not a good idea to impersonate a police officer.

Stone Mountain-Redan Patch takes a deeper look into crime reports from the DeKalb County Police.

Not a good idea:  March 19 turned out to be an extremely unfortunate day for a 50-year old man from Sims. When he was stopped by DeKalb County police on Covington Highway for driving a vehicle with a revoked registration, he informed the officer that he was a police officer out of Sharpsburg, NC. The man could produce no identification and told the officer that he had not been issued with an identification, a badge nor a handgun. He also stated that his daughter was the owner of the car he was driving, but records indicated that he was the registered owner. After speaking with Chief Sara Wiggins of the Sharpsburg Police Department, he was taken into custody and lodged in the DeKalb County jail. A number of handguns and holsters, as well as brass knuckles and a bullet proof vest, were found in the vehicle.

Robbery with a knife: On April 18, a 22-year old Lithonia man was charged with robbery of a residence with a knife. The victim stated that he was on his patio using his cell phone when a man walked behind the building and asked to use the phone. The robber brandished a long black knife and attempted to force his way into the apartment, but the victim resisted, the report said. The victim said that he attempted to reach the patio and the suspect grabbed him from behind and tried to cut his neck. The victim said he continued to fight and scream until the suspect dropped the knife and fled the scene. He was treated at the scene for a laceration to his chin and right side of his neck. Shortly after, Officer  C. E. Cole saw a man walking on Fairington Road without a shirt. He noticed that the male was carrying a pair of black jeans, and he stopped the suspect. Upon being questioned, the suspect said that he was coming from his girlfriend’s house and that he cut his hand while he was jumping a fence at her house. The victim arrived at the scene and identified the suspect as his assailant.

Delivering food is a dangerous job:  A Domino’s Pizza delivery driver said he attempted to make a delivery at the Clifton Glenn Apartments, but there was no one at the residence where the pizza was to be delivered. Upon calling the phone number given when the pizza was ordered, he was told that the person was at the store and would return shortly. The victim said that after about five minutes a man arrived and told him that they needed to go to another apartment. The delivery driver said that as they began walking out of the building, the suspect and two others approached him. The first suspect showed a silver color semi-automatic pistol to the driver and told him to “give it up.” All three suspects were between 17 and 25 years old. The victim said he handed over approximately $25 in cash and the pizza.

A driver for Hong Kong Garden said he was robbed by three men when he attempted to deliver food on Phillips Lake Bluff. The victim said a man came to the door and was followed by two others who came behind him and placed a gun to his right side. He said the suspects took the food, cell phone, wallet with $700 and credit cards as well as social security card and drivers license.  The victim called the police from his place of employment and said that he was not injured during the incident.

A walk-by robbery: A Waffle House employee said that he was robbed at gunpoint at a red light on Covington Highway and Miller Road by two suspects. The victim said that the first suspect, about 6 feet, 1 inch and weighing about 180 pounds, was wearing a red hat, white shirt and khaki shorts, and that the second suspect was about the same height and wore blue jeans and a blue shirt. He said that both suspects were between 18 and 30 years old. The victim said that the first suspect started to cross the street but then went to the driver's side window and put a gun to his head. The victim said the second suspect approached the front passenger window, reached in and took a Bank of America deposit bag containing $2,000. He said they also took his wallet containing miscellaneous cards and $200 in cash. He said that both men fled on foot on Miller Road.
