Fleeing Suspect Leads Police to Marijuana Stash

The man took off running as a DeKalb police officer tried to pat him down, according to the incident report.

A man who fled from police led them to a stash of pot in an apartment, according to a DeKalb county incident report.

A police officer saw four males who looked to be juveniles smoking a marijuana cigarette in the 1200 block of S. Hairston Road in unincorporated Stone Mountain on March 5, the report states. One of the males had a black flag in his left rear pants pocket, "commonly displayed by gang members."

The officer stopped the subjects in the Kroger parking lot. Another responding officer reported that they smelled a strong odor of marijuana as they spoke with the subjects.

One of the males fled the scene as an officer was trying to pat him down. The officer chased him to an apartment at the Ashland Pines complex. After trying several times, the officer got inside and took the subject into custody; additional police came on the scene to assist. The officer wrote in the report:

While clearing the location for additional subjects they observed marijuana steams [sic], marijuana buds and residue on the floor of the first bedroom to the left in a small box just inside the closet on the floor.

A warrant was obtained to search the apartment.

The officer who gave chase, after getting inside the apartment, also saw another male coming out of a rear bedroom, pointing an unknown object in the officer's direction, according to the report. An arrest warrant was obtained for that person, who left the location.

The 19-year-old suspect who fled was arrested. Among the charges were criminal trespass, obstruction of officers, and intent to distribute marijuana. The apartment lease holder and another resident were also arresed.
