Crews Stop Gas Leak in Stone Mountain-Gwinnett

The leak happened in the 4100 block of U.S. 78, westbound.

An Atlanta Gas Light emergency crew stopped a gas leak Monday in Stone Mountain in Gwinnett County.

The leak happened in the 4100 block of U.S. 78, westbound. A construction crew hit a gas meter during the demolition of and old Food Mart gas station, said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services public information officer, in a release about the incident.

Firefighters dispatched to the scene established a "hot zone perimeter" and evacuated about 13 people from a nearby mobile home park and its management office.  There were no injuries, Rutledge said.

As a precaution, firefighters closed the westbound lanes of Highway 78 between Parker Court and Park Way, SW and diverted traffic around the leak.

Crews got a little help from Mother Nature. Rutledge said a steady breeze helped dissipate the vapors and reduce the threat hazard.

AGL's emergency workers stopped the leak quickly when they arrived, Rutledge said. Residents and staff at the mobile home park returned to their homes and work.
