Assault Victim Leaving ICU, Church Staff Member Says

A woman sexually assaulted at St. Timothy United Methodist Church is still hospitalized but is recovering, a church staff member said.

A woman sexually assaulted inside St. Timothy United Methodist Church Saturday is leaving the intensive care unit today, Monday, but will remain hospitalized for now, a church staff member said.

The victim is on staff at the church on Memorial Drive and was working there on Saturday when she opened the door and let in a man asking for help, according to a fellow staff member. The victim was also beaten and robbed.

"She's doing well and is going to do well after some time," said the staff member, who asked not to be identified. "As tragic as it is, we are so blessed" that the victim was found immediately after the attack and that her injuries are not life-threatening, she said.

DeKalb County police have an unclear description of the attacker, but they are looking for a black male who may be in his 50s,  about 6'2" and around 180 pounds, spokeswoman Mekka Parish said. Police are working leads in the case today, she said.

The victim was alone in the church at the time of the attack but was found by another church employee right after the assault, according to the staff person who spoke to Patch.
