So far, some of the reviews of the remake of "Sparkle," whose cast includes Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks, haven't been especially glowing:
In the title role, "American Idol" winner Sparks has an innocence and earnestness, wide eyes filled with hope and decency, a blazing smile, that beautiful singing voice. And then she has to go and talk, in flat, breathless tones, infusing Sparkle with all the conviction of a drama club diva with her first lead in a school play.
The material here is not much to work with, and there shouldn't be any posthumous awards given out this Fall. But if the screenplay is a below-average, cluttered mess, the performances of Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo, Mike Epps and Whitney Houston elevate it to at least a passable, cluttered mess.
