MLK Weekend: One Power Packed Weekend, Three Service Projects

The Tau Pi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated remained true to AKA’s emphasis of “Service to All Mankind” during the King Holiday weekend.  On Saturday, January 18, Tau Pi Omega collaborated with the 13 other metro Atlanta chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., hosting an Emerging Young Leaders Summit, Turn Up the Dream.  Young ladies  who are a part of the Emerging Young Leaders program, which targets girls in grades six through eight, met at the Coretta Scott King Academy to attend workshops .  The participants were asked to bring canned goods to the event which were collected for the American Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO) and the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) .

On Sunday, January 19, Tau Pi Omega partnered with Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alphafor a Sunday Supper honoring our veterans.  Veterans, including members of the VEO and VFW, were invited to attend.  A total of thirty five veterans were honored.  Dinner was served and toiletries and canned goods were collected by both chapters which were donated to the VEO and VFW.

The King Holiday Weekend culminated on Monday as members of Tau Pi Omega volunteered at the Product Rescue Center of the Atlanta Community Food Bank by sorting, inspecting, and packing food on two of the volunteer shifts on that day.  Combined, the shifts assisted in packing over 31,000 pounds of food which will provide over 28,000 meals to those in need.  Tau Pi Omega used this weekend to kick off the year with true dedication to service.
