For some, going back to high school may not be a joyful escape. But, as an adult, I have found there are benefits to going there in the evenings -- Community School classes. We all have hobbies and desires that have been put on hold while parenting; however, with classes like cardio, weight training, yoga, Spanish, dance, landscaping, and cooking, you have some convenient options to jump start your all-too-sleepy right brain.
For me, I weight trained before kids. Admittedly, I always needed the motivation of a good coach -- my husband. Although he still motivates by example, balancing exercise as a priority and spending quality time with the kids, I often find it difficult to stop taking care of the kids or the house to take care of me.
Then, a few years ago I discovered a cardio and weight training class at Parkview High School. I now have a great exercise solution for total me time. At a location near home, only once a week for 1 ½ hours, I can find a trainer to motivate me and peers to encourage my attendance.
Cardio instructor Myra Stewart has been teaching at Parkview for more than five years. She advises women to take control of their health and to relieve stress. Working mom Alex Simmer of Lawrenceville agrees that Stewart's class helps her do that and more.
"When dieting alone didn't work, I started this class," she said. "I have lost 19 pounds since April, gained confidence and reduced my anxiety levels."
Now, what mom can't use that?
Trade time with your spouse so you can each have personal enrichment. Not only are you more focused and positive parents, it models healthy behaviors for your kids. You deserve to be taken care of too. A weekly exercise or educational escape should be part of your Take-Care-of-Mom Plan.
