Following Atlanta: City of Speed

What becomes of the hurriers?

Just a bit ago, I here, and how it flows over into our daily lives.  For the sake of curiosity, I decided to follow some of these folks.  Well, the results were interesting, so here goes:

  • I’m doing 65 on 285.  A car flies past me like I’m standing still.  I caught up with it.  They parked at the mall.
  • A car cutting in and out of traffic on N. Decatur Rd. ended up at the gym.
  • A lady on the phone, flying past everyone else, ended up at Goodwill.
  • One man was passing everyone on 78, on the phone, and shortly ahead I found him pulled off the road, still talking on the phone.  (Just think of all the time he wasted on the side of the road when he could have been wasting his gas speeding around!)
  • A family whizzed past me, and ended up at the same grocery store as me, and mom was exasperated as she hustled the kids through the store, yelling, chastising, and ended up treating the cashier like a dog. (Bet she has a happy home life…)
  • A pickup truck with a rack sped past me in the fast lane, and ended up at Home Depot.
  • A large orange Dekalb County Roads and Drainage vehicle passed everyone in the emergency lane on 285 at 4:30 p.m., just in time to get off at Memorial Drive and I guess clock out.
  • A frustrated tailgater pulled up to a gas pump.
  • And the best one yet.  A pickup truck was speeding down the road, and stopping to put up those illegal signs on the telephone poles that make our haven look like trash.  Yes, I stopped behind him and pulled them all down.
There is justice, ever so small, in the world yet.

I know we can’t control others, and that is not my intent.  Just a reality check.

I was always under the impression that when you break the law by exceeding the speed limit by 20 mph, you were headed to the hospital, your wife was in the car about to have a baby, or your house was burning down.  Guess I was seriously wrong.
