You Need a New Website for 2014!

I know it has been a while since I have been able to post anything. But, when business is good, you have to adjust your focus a little bit. However, with business being good, I have been able to make the best decision of my business career. That is by hiring a personal assistant, but that isn’t what we are here to talk about… Well, you can however, thank her because she is making it to where I can start blogging again and helping all of you wonderful people out.

Ok, so it really is a broad statement to say that everyone needs a new website in 2014, but most of you do. What I wanted to do is tell you why you need a new website and some of the things you need to look for in your new website. Let us start with why you need a new website.

Why do I need a new website for 2014?

Let’s start with a question, when was the last time you updated your website? Has it been sitting stale for a couple of years? Has the focus of your business changed and now your website doesn’t even match your focus?

The biggest reason you need a new website is so that your potential viewers can see that your company is alive and well! One of the biggest areas that I see, when prospecting, is websites that haven’t been touched in 2 years and some even longer than that. What does that tell your prospective customers? Better yet, what does that tell Google? Most importantly, your customers need to see that your site is up to date and has fresh content. If you have a blog, make sure you are blogging once a month. I am guilty on that one for not blogging like I should. But that changes for 2014 and you will love all the new material I have coming out for you.

One of the things that not a lot of people know is that Google looks for fresh content on your website. This is one of the biggest reasons you will hear me always talking about how blogging is so important for a business website and for a business in general. Google showing you love because you have fresher content than your competition is always a good thing. Yes, the big G does pay attention to fresh content and it does make a difference if you are doing it and your competition is not.

We have talked about the WHY, now we need to talk about what you need in your new website to keep getting that Google love.

What do I need in my new website?

Let me address something real quick, for those of you with little to no budget for a website, save your money. Save up for a website that will give you all the things I am about to talk about. The DIY websites may look ok, but you won’t get a lot of love from the big G, unless you have no one else in your market.

A website with a CMS backend is the best kind of website that you can get. Now there are a ton of different options that are out there and some are better than others. CMS = Content Management System, this allows you to go in and update, change or manipulate any and all of the text on your website. This helps when you have small changes that you need done and you don’t want to have to shell out to your designer to make these small adjustments.

What is my suggestion when it comes to a CMS? Being a WordPress junky, I will always say WordPress. Now let me preface that by letting you know that I am also a research junky. So I did my homework on CMS’s before I decided which one I would build all of my client sites on. I could get on a soap box as to why WordPress is a superior product, but I am not writing a book, I am writing a blog post.  Let us just say, it is the best that is out there and that you should have your new site built on that platform.

What else do I need to look for?

Responsive design, this means that your website will automatically adjust based on the window size that is looking at it. Now I am sure as a business owner, you have had someone sell you or try to sell you a “Mobile Website”. Just saying it out loud makes me want to throw up. Why does it make me sick that people are pushing these? Because they are already outdated!

Responsive is new technology and when it comes to mobile, the big G looks for responsive to send traffic to, not mobile. It is THAT big of a deal when it comes to being found and getting that traffic from the big G. Anyone telling you anything different doesn’t follow the big G and what they talk about when it comes to websites and search results. Again, I could get on a soap box about this issue, but I won’t so that I can get to the next point.

You need a blog on your new or updated website. Anyone saying that “news” is just as good as a blog on your website is misinformed. The next part is, well if you have something that is news, where does it go? It goes under the blog section, this way you can add your personal touch to it. You know who loves reading your blog and seeing news? Your customers, your potential customers AND the big G. A WordPress based site will give you the option of blogging and adding all the flair you need. Guess what, you won’t even have to pay a designer to upload the content for you! I just saved you a ton of money on the backend by telling you all of this.

So let’s wrap this up shall we… First, if you haven’t updated your website in a couple of years, now is the time. Google is looking for fresh content, responsive based websites that are setup on a CMS. Did I mention that the big G shows more love to WordPress than any other CMS? That comes in real handy when you are in a heavy market with everyone vying for that top position. Did I also mention that I am running a huge discount for the end of the year? You can check that out on my website and see how you can save $1000!
