Celebratory Gunfire and its assault on our safety.

Every year innocent people are injured or killed due to Celebratory Gunfire. This activity has been analyzed and debated for many years with no clear plan of attack to bring this overlooked epidemic to a halt. On New Years day 2010, Marquel Peters was killed while sitting in a Dekalb county church at watch-night service. What was suppose to be a night of celebration quickly turned into a night of tragedy as one family had to now bury their one and only precious five year old son. News outlets covered this story all over the world but to no avail the shooting continued. Despite the countless confirmations from around the world and the  reports of children dying from falling bullets, adults being injured or killed and the CDC confirming that this activity can kill, the shooting still continues.

Activist rose up all over the U.S. pushing for tougher penalties and in some states getting legislation passed to enact tougher penalties in hopes to cease this activity. Law enforcement released press releases alerting the public that this activity is illegal and the danger it causes to human life but the shooting continued. Year after year we continued to hear reports of injuries, property damage and death due to Celebratory Gunfire but instead of uniting against this dangerous and intrusive activity, some people chose to make this a debate about the government taking away guns from the american people.

What do we do when we live in a country that is not willing to have a open conversation about this activity? How many more people have to die on a day that we should be celebrating our country's independence and being blessed to move forward into a new year? I believe the answer starts with us looking at the statistics of injuries, property damage and lives lost and make a sincere decision to educate and advocate for a safer America. Celebratory Gunfire can no longer be ignored or swept under the rug as being unimportant. The bullet that killed Marquel was fired from miles away. We may never know who fired the fatal bullet that killed this child. But we do know that through education and awareness we are able to slowly put a end to this activity and ensure that no more innocent people die.

Does your community experience Celebratory Gunfire? Do you and your family live in fear on the 4th of July and New Years Eve? I know that this activity is rampant across the U.S. and until it is dealt with, we all are targets.
