Stone Mountain Scholarship Winner Gets Visit from Hawks Player

Elton Brand shoots hoops and teaches skill drills after surprising students with college scholarships.

Stone Mountain student Nura Mohammad received a surprise visit from Atlanta Hawks forward Elton Brand and was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from Sun Life Financial.

Mohammad thought she was participating in a basketball exercise clinic with peers when Brand surprised her with the award.

The private basketball clinic took place at Highland Athletic Club Thursday night, where Brand was on hand to lead more than 60 Atlanta youth from both nonprofits in a variety of basketball drills and games. After the surprise announcement, Brand also conducted a Q&A session, giving insight to his background growing up, and what it takes to succeed in life and in school.

Raising Expectations and the Global Village Project each received $50,000 grants, while Mohammad received a $5,000 Sun Life Rising Star college scholarship for her educational achievements and commitment to the community.
