ReAL Money, REAL Life: Financial Literacy for students 18-24
REAL Money, REAL Life is a four-day program that will educate high school juniors, seniors, and young college students about being financially independent and responsible as they become adults. Often times our children move out feeling the excitement of being able to make their own choices, only to discover that they don’t know how to survive financially. A survey in December 2011 found that 53% of 18- to 24-year-olds are living with their parents or moved back with them temporarily during the past few years.[1]. A combination of economic factors and high debt leave our young adults with few options. Preparation is key to financial success.
What will the students learn?
REAL MONEY: This program covers the basic skills and will teach the benefits of making goals, building assets, and being accountable for their financial choices. This program provides the knowledge and tools needed to help create a lifetime of “Wealthy Habits.”
- Making money through jobs and entrepreneurship
- Managing money by budgeting
- Multiplying money by investing
- Thinking like and developing the habits of the wealthy
- Managing risk, not avoiding it
- Saving early & often
REAL LIFE: Additionally, this program will cover topics such as obtaining a job, renting an apartment and interviewing roommates. Through engaging activities, they will be given real life scenarios and use role-playing to help them become competent and confident. They will learn the importance of managing their debt and meeting their obligations timely. We will also show them the future cost of those “wants” they think they can’t live without.
