Last Chance: Facebook Timeline Switch Nears

Brand pages already have migrated, and now personal pages are on the horizon.

Apparently the big Facebook Timeline switch has not happened yet.

My personal page (and a lot of others) is still in normal mode, but I decided to go ahead and work on the Timeline version. I don't want to be surprised when Facebook finally decides to move forward, and then have no time to really go through anything.Β

To be clear, brand pages have been converted. That happened a few days ago. You can check out a local Patch's page by clicking here.

I don't really think I'm a fan, but pretty soon none of us will have a choice.

It is unclear when the big switch, otherwise known as the final migration, of personal Facebook pages will be. Why wait around for that notification at the top of your page, assuming there will be one? Get in front of it.

Here's some things to look into when you do hit the Timeline button:

  • Figure out a cover photo. Your cover photo will be the giant picture at the top of your page. Facebook says you should make this photo as unique as possible, and that if you do, it helps to prevent spam. Also, it must be 720 pixels wide.
  • Hide or share life events. If there are things on there that you did, and maybe your forgot about, here's your chance to erase that. Just hover over an entry, click the the pencil icon, and then hit "Hide from Timeline." On the other hand, if there is something on there you particularly like, you can highlight it by hovering over the entry and clicking the star icon.
  • Manage your activity log. This is kind of like the admin section for brand pages. You can see everything and control things from there. You can adjust the privacy of posts, and you can also decide what is visible on your Timeline. Only you can see the activity log. To get to this feature, look under your cover photo. There will be a tab there for it.
  • Add life events. From the top of your page, pick the type of story you want to add (status, photo, place or life event). Then add what you want, select an audience, and click "post." You can also scroll down the middle bar of your Timeline page, and a plus sign (+) will appear, click it, and a box will come up that allows you to add things. Note of caution: All life events are defaulted to public view, so be sure to change this if you want.
