Hundreds Attend Vigil for Local Family Members Killed in N.J. Crash; Funeral is Saturday

The vigil took place at Stephenson Middle School, where Ainsworth, Jacqueline and Drew Mallett were remembered by friends and family.

Some 300-400 people came to Stephenson Middle School Sunday night to share memories of Ainsworth, Jacqueline and Drew Mallett, local family members killed in a car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike last Thursday.

According to information on Stephenson Middle School website, the funeral service for the Malletts is Saturday, Jan.5, 11 a.m. at the Assemblies of God Tabernacle, 1580 Agape Way, Decatur.

The Mallett's daughter Nicole survived, but a cousin who spoke at the vigil said she is "not doing well at all," and that Ainsworth Mallett's mother, whom the family reportedly traveled up north to see, has not yet been told the devastating news.

The Malletts ran the Golden Krust restaurant on Rockbridge Road in Stone Mountain. Jacqueline Mallett worked at Stephenson Middle.

Some who spoke wept as they described the family, using words such as "so kind, so nice"; and some memories elicited a gentle laughter throughout the crowd. An athletics coach recalled Jacqueline Mallett -- "Miss Jackie" -- presenting one of the teams with a "banquet" that included tasty oxtails: "I was like Drew, you're officially a member of the team," he said.

One speaker described Ainsworth Mallett as "a kind, good, respectable man."

I am so sad to hear of the passing of this family especially Drew. I knew him from elementary school he attended Wynbrooke Theme School. He always had a big grin on his face and a wonderful heart. The last time I saw Drew was at his parents restaurant in late October and he served me a patty an he was grinning as always and his mother was showing him how to use the cash register. I will treasure that moment close to my heart because that was the last time I saw Drew. May you Rest In Peace.

Nicole our hearts go out to you and we lift you up in our prayers. God has a purpose for your life. You were spared for a reason that we don't understand at present but God shall reveal in His time. We grieve with you and we are just a call away. None of us know the pain that you are going through no matter what we may have gone through ourselves as we all deal with situations in our own way. I encourage you to trust Him through this dark night, keep alive the memories of the good times shared and walk in His favor and protection.
