The Score Card: Stone Mountain Restaurant Inspections

The results of recent inspections at Stone Mountain eateries.

Here are the results of recent inspections of Stone Mountain restaurants and a summary of what the inspectors reported. To see more reports, go to the DeKalb County Board of Health website. The list includes restaurants in Stone Mountain city and in unincorporated Stone Mountain. 

APRIL 19

Name and Location: Popeye's Chicken, 4815 Redan Road

Deficiencies cited in the report: The inside of the ice machine and the inside of the preparation cooler were soiled.

Name and Location: Madina Restaurant, 5291 Memorial Drive

Score: 79/C

Previous scores: 88/B on July 5, 2010

Deficiencies cited in the report: No employee health policy was seen. Uncooked animal foods were not kept separate from one another during storage, preparation, holding and display. Food wasn't stored at least six inches above the floor (soda and juices were seen stored on the floor). Signs telling employees to wash their hands weren't in a visible location at all hand sinks used by employees. The inspector reported a "heavy buildup" of on the outer surfaces of stove, walk-in cooler and shelves ("nonfood contact surfaces"), and on floors and walls. A light shield was missing in the rear of the kitchen. A water bottle was reported to be on the prep counter and a cell phone and keys were stored on a shelf with spices, rice and tomato paste.

Previous scores: 100/A on October 5, 2010 and 100/A on Feb. 8, 2010

Deficiencies cited in the report: The inspector saw 30 packages of bread with the dates 4/6/11 and 4/13/11, and more than 100 containers of cereal with an October 2010 expiration date and more than 100 packages of crackers with a March 2011 expiration date.

APRIL 18

Name and location: Red Hills Jerk Center, 7185 Rockbridge Road.

Score: 84/B

Previous scores: 78/C on Feb. 1, 2011.

Deficiencies cited in the report: Foil was used to plug a drain, and water drained from it slowly. Foods that should be kept cold weren't kept below 41 degrees. Foods that are kept hot weren't kept at 135 degrees or above. Utensils used for hot foods weren't kept in a container of water that was 135 degrees (water was 93 degrees). Freezer "not maintained in good repair." There was only one drain plug for a three-compartment sink.

Name and location: Quick Bite Restaurant, 5444 Rockbridge Road

Score: 71/C

Previous scores: 91/A on Feb. 1, 2011 and 78/C on Jan. 26, 2011.

Deficiencies cited in the report: Juice freshly squeezed and bottled by the staff didn't have a label of ingredients and a warning that it "does not meet pasteurization." Raw meat wasn't kept separate from cooked or foods eaten raw during storage, prep, holding and display. Hot foods weren't kept at more than 135 degrees. 

APRIL 14

Name and location: Tony's Famous BBQ Wings, 567 Stephenson Road

Score: 94/A

Previous scores: None -- new business.

Deficiencies cited in the report: Chemicals were stored next to surfaces that have contact with food and cooking equipment. The inspector saw bottles of insect pest control that are for household use only. Wooden shelves used for food storage and that had contact with food didn't have protective sealant. Metal shelves in a freezer were rusting. The outside of a refrigerator was dirty. The trash can in the the unisex restroom had no cover. There were no base boards at the wall-to-floor connection. 

Name and location: The Rock House, 5329 Mimosa Drive

Score: 79/C

Previous scores: 100/A on Dec. 14, 2010

Deficiencies cited in the report: An employee was seen going from one task to another "where potential contamination can occur" without washing his/her hands. An employee was peeling potatoes without using gloves. Hot food wasn't kept at 135 degrees or more. Food was stored on the floor of the walk-in cooler. 

APRIL 13

Name and location: Kool Runnings Restaurant, 4977 Memorial Drive

Score: 76/C

Previous scores: 94/A on May 7, 2010 and 87/B on Jan. 28, 2008

Deficiencies cited in the report: Raw meats were not kept separate from other food. Container of cabbage were cooling and completely covered (should be open some). Sign telling staff to wash their hands weren't at all hand sinks used by employees. Utensils for hot foods were kept in water with a temperature of 83 degrees (should be 135 degrees or higher).  There was no testing device to measure the concentration of sanitizing solution. The inspector reported seeing two roaches in the kitchen and behind the front line.

April 12

Name and location: Redan High School, 5247 Redan Road

Score: 88/B

Previous scores: 87/B on Nov. 29, 2010 and 88/B on Feb. 23, 2010

Deficiencies cited in the report: Cold foods weren't at a temperature of 41 degrees. Hot foods weren't kept at a temperature of 135 degrees or more.  Expired hot sauce was seen in the storage area. 

Name and location: Allgood Elementary School, 659 Allgood Road

Score: 92/A

Previous scores: 92/A on Nov. 5, 2010 and 87/B on May 14, 2010.

Deficiencies cited: Unauthorized people were in the prep area. Food wasn't stored six inches above the floor in the walk-in freezer. An unclean pan was rinsed in the prep sink. The ceiling fan above the break in the storage are had heavy dust. 

APRIL 11

Name and location: Phil Good Burgers and Subs, 1234 South Hairston Road

Score: 91/A

Previous scores: None, new business.

Deficiencies cited: The cold holding temperature was in violation.
