Stone Mountain CID, Congressman Hank Johnson Working to Create Jobs in DeKalb

Congressman Hank Johnson meets with Stone Mountain CID Board of Directors

The Stone Mountain Community Improvement District has met with Congressman Hank Johnson to discuss ways to stimulate economic growth and create jobs in DeKalb County.

Last month's meeting took place at the Patillo Industrial Real Estate located on Ponce de Leon Ave in Stone Mountain. Patillo Industrial Real Estate is one of 80 property owners who have signed on to participate in the Stone Mountain CID.

“We met with Congressman Johnson and he is committed to bringing jobs to DeKalb County," said Emory Morseberger, president of the Stone Mountain CID. “There is approximately 2 million square feet of vacant office space in DeKalb County. A million square feet translate to a thousand jobs which means we can bring two thousand jobs to DeKalb County," said Morseberger.

A CID is a geographically defined area where industrial and commercial properties agree to increase their own taxes in order to fund improvements. CIDs work in conjunction with the residents, local governments and businesses in the surrounding area.

“We’ve very quickly formed many partnerships that we need to have in place,” said Morsberger. “We are actively seeking every available funding resource at all levels. We’re on track to accomplish more in the next 15 to 18 months than some CIDs complete in their first three to four years," said Morseberger in a recent press release.

Several DeKalb County officials, including DeKalb County Commissioner Stan Watson (Super District 7) and Tax Commissioner Claudia Lawson expressed their support for local CIDs and have applauded their efforts.

"The formation of the Stone Mountain Community Improvement District creates a movement of positive change in our community," said Commissioner Watson, in a press release. "With the Stone Mountain CID, we will increase property values, promote economic development, and increase safety in our neighborhoods.”

"CIDs are good for the community," Lawson said in a statement. "They improve business and provide economic enhancement.  Forming CIDs is a win-win-win for the businesses, the community and the county."

The Stone Mountain CID Board of Directors meets at 12 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.
