Proposed Overlay District Would Keep Strip Clubs Out of Stone Mountain CID

There will be a public meeting today (Jan. 15) at 5 p.m. to discuss the proposed overlay district.

Updated 1/30/13: The DeKalb Board of Commissioners tabled the the proposed overlay district at its Jan. 22 meeting.

Original story:

The Stone Mountain Community Improvement District (CID) wants to keep adult entertainment businesses, which have been inquiring about setting up in the area, out of its boundaries.

There will be a public meeting tonight at Eagle Rock Distributing, 1375 Beverage Dr. in Stone Mountain, at 5 p.m. to discuss the CID’s effort to create an overlay district that would prohibit those those types of businesses in the area, which goes along Mountain Industrial Boulevard roughly from Hugh Howell up to about Lawrenceville Highway.

CID executive director Emory Morsberger said some building owners in the district have been approached by adult entertainment businesses wanting to rent space. The current zoning allows strip clubs, he said, but an overlay district would change that.

“We don’t need our values going down,” Morsberger said. “We don’t want them to locate here.”

An overlay district would also restrict junk yards and metal buildings. "We're trying to maintain the quality of the neighborhood," Morsberger said.

The matter goes before the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 22 (see update at top of article).

It’s possible that the annexation of of Doraville and Brookhaven have caused strip clubs to seek other locations, Morsberger said.
