Planet Fitness To Open On Memorial Drive

Slated to open in January, the new health club will be located in Save-A-Lot's former space in Stonemont Village shopping plaza and will hire about 20 people.

Planet Fitness is moving into space on Memorial Drive.

The health club, which will be around 17,000 square feet and hire about 20 people as well as two managers. It took over Save-A-Lot grocery store’s former location at 5211 Memorial Drive in the Stonemont Village shopping plaza on October 1, said Stanley DeMartinis, Jr., managing partner with Alder Partners LLC, the firm that operates the Planet Fitness franchisees in the metro Atlanta market and the Boston area.

DeMartinis said since putting an ad up on Craig’s List that Planet Fitness was hiring for its Stone Mountain location, it has received 300 applications. (If interested in applying for a job, visit fill out an application on the Planet Fitness website.

The former grocery store is going through a complete demolition of the interior. The opening date is slated for Jan 5.

DeMartinis said the new club will have more than 100 pieces of cardiovascular equipment. There will be a 30-minute workout area, massage beds, a massage chair and more. There has been an investment of $750,000 in workout equipment alone.

The Stone Mountain location will be the third in metro Atlanta for Planet Fitness; a fourth is under construction on Buford Highway in Atlanta.

Planet Fitness opened up 18 months ago on Wesley Chapel, in a space that was a former Walmart. It is located next to Everest Institute.

“I love this area. I think the people down here are great to work with,” DeMartinis said. 

Planet Fitness isn't the only gym to come to the Stone Mountain-Lithonia area. L.A. Fitness is building two facilities - at Covington Highway and Panola Road and in Stone Mountain in Gwinnett County.

Why are fitness centers popping up? DeMartinis said more people are learning about obesity and its effects, and that their health is "at the forefront."

"There’s a lot more awareness," he said. "Fitness is booming."
