Family Dollar Store Under Construction on Panola Road

The new store is slated to open by the end of the year, the company says. Stores typically hire 8-10 people.

A Family Dollar store is under construction on Panola Road across the lot from the shopping center where J.R. Crickets is located.

The store is scheduled to open by the end of the year, a spokeswoman with the discount retailer told Patch.

Family Dollar stores on average hire 8-10 team members and are about 8,000 square feet, said Bryn Winburn, public relations manager for the Matthews, N.C.-based company.

Once open, the new store will replace the existing store nearby at 2657 Panola Rd., Winburn said.

The new Family Dollar will be less than a mile away from the Lou Walker Senior Center and less than two miles from DeKalb Medical Center at Hillandale.

It's been almost a year since which has a Lithonia address but is across from Berean Christian Church, which has an unincorporated Stone Mountain address.

Check back with Patch for updates on the new Family Dollar.

Perhaps, if enough of us think what Family Dollar is doing is not good for this community, we could work together with other neighborhoods and learn from their experiences in holding this company accountable. Family Dollar stores are criticized for: • saturating and tainting the look of the community • not maintaining standards • not adequately contributing to the local community Here is a video that shows how another metro community is working to hold Family Dollar accountable: http://cascade.patch.com/articles/video-residents-gather-to-hear-councilmembers-plans-for-stopping-new-family-dollar-stores#video-11649680

Why do they think we need another Family Dollar. Do they think we can not afford anything costing more than a dollar ? It appears they are saying we can not afford quality.

I agree Angela, These stores always seem to be in our neighborhoods. We need to demand more higher end stores. This would never happen in North Fulton Alpharetta area. We are not Low Budget people and do not need all of these low budget stores...

Thats exactly what they are saying.. We as a community need to come together. They always seem to put the billboards advertisint strip clubs and liquor stores in our areas also.
