Bites Nearby: Kathmandu Kitchen & Grill

Our weekly look at a restaurant close by that's worth checking out.

There aren't too many Indian restaurants around here, unfortunately, and even fewer Nepalese ones. Kathmandu Kitchen & Grill serves both kinds of food, so I was anxious to try it.

The first time I had for lunch there, I went for the Indian buffet. At only $7.99, it's quite a bargain and has everything you would expect; Tandoori chicken, curries, vegetables, goat meat, dahl, naan, Chicken Tikka, pakoras and other sundry goodies. All very promising. The buffet is available every single day from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

It gets really interesting, though, when you try the Nepali menu, which is what some friends and I did at lunchtime today. It just so happens that April 13 is the Nepali New Year - 2069 - so the staff were in celebratory mood. They kept bringing us extra little dishes that we hadn't ordered just to see if we liked them. We did.

There was an appetizer called Chicken 65, spicy bits of meat eaten with toothpicks - very "assertive," as one of my friends described it. A noodle dish called Wai Wai Sandheko (great name) came in a broth and was delightful. Not so delightful was a grain dish called Bhatta Sandheko, which was very hard to chew. Later the server told us we were supposed to wash it down with a drink. Oh well. The dumplings, both meat and vegetarian, were superb. They call them Momo.

We tried a soup called Chicken Thukpa which had an unusual texture, crispy yet soft. My favorite of the bunch. Nepali food uses quite a few spices such as cumin and ginger. Plenty of onions too. All were evident in the Aloo Tama Bodi, consisting of fresh bamboo shoots, black eyed beans and potatoes. Very unusual.

To drink they recommended Masala Tea, sweet and rich. For dessert there was a traditional rice pudding called Kheer, with raisins and nuts, and a piece of Halwa on top. Halwa means "sweet' in Arabic and can take many forms. In this case, it tasted nutty and was made with flour, butter and sugar.

I haven't listed all the prices but suffice to say five of us ate a full lunch for 40 bucks. With a Scoutmob deal, it came to half that. There are many other things on the menu and obviously more visits are required to fully appreciate them. We will be back.

Kathmandu has home delivery within three miles of their location. They have catering services, a party venue, a private meeting room, a full bar and live music from Nepal every other Thursday. The address is 926 Montreal Road, Suite 11, Clarkston, GA. 30021. The phone number is 678-732-3449.
