Bites Nearby: Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill

A family venture started in Bronx, NY, turns into a nationwide success with more than 100 locations.

In 1989, when the Hawthorne family started a little food business below a TV repair shop in Bronx, NY, they had no idea that their dream would morph into a nationwide enterprise.

Jamaican-born entrepreneur Lowell Hawthorne, his wife Lorna, four of his siblings and their spouses, pooled their funds to open that first Golden Krust retail spot. By 1996, the family owned 17 restaurants through New York City.

That same year, Golden Krust became the first Caribbean-owned business in the United States to be granted a franchise license, and today there are more than 100 locations in nine states, according to the company website.

In Georgia, there are five locations, including Snellville, and Lithonia.

The restaurants specialize in traditional Caribbean foods, such as jerk wings, curry chicken, Jamaican-style patties, curried goat and braised oxtails. Side orders include: dumplings, fried plantains, rice and peas and more. In addtion to the combo meals, sandwiches and wraps also are available.

If you like pastries, the list is long and varied. There's carrot cake, bulla cakes (ginger-flavored sweet cakes), rum cake (dark fruit cake soaked in Jamaican rum), spiced buns (soft sweet bread with fruit and raisins), rock cake (a crunchy cake with coconut) and more.

Breakfast foods also are among the offerings.

So, if you're ever in the neighborhood and have a taste for a bit of island flavor, give Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill a try. Not only is the menu varied, but the prices also are reasonable.
