Music Spotlight: GibbsCash at Sweet Potato Cafe

A casual mention during dinner at a few weeks ago led to musical duo GibbsCash's first gig at the restaurant, located in the City of Stone Mountain.

Vocalist Sydney Cash, 25, is from Lilburn, and her boyfriend J.D. Gibbs, 26, of Stone Mountain, plays guitar. They were enjoying their first dinner at the farm-to-table establishment when the waitress told them live music performances take place there a few times a month.

"Whenever we hear that, we say, 'hey, we're musicians,' " Cash said.

GibbsCash performs Saturday, Aug. 11 between 7-10 p.m. at Sweet Potato Cafe. It's the duo's first gig together at a Stone Mountain venue; Cash performed at during the 2008 season.

Cash describes GibbsCash's musical style as "kind laid-back acoustic, with a little mix of pop and a little hint of jazz. " They cover songs and incorporate their own original music in their performances.

For Sweet Potato Cafe owner Karen Patton, adding music to the menu seems to be a good draw.

"We normally have music every other Friday. We have people who call all time asking, 'is this the Friday?' " Patton said. "This is unusual for us to have music on Saturday, but Saturday has turned out to be our busiest night."

"The groups have their own following, so that has helped,"  Patton said. "They tell people, 'this is where we're going to be tonight.'  I think it has helped."
