Get Out: What to Do This Weekend

There are other things going in the area besides the Harry Potter opening: Justin Bieber, chocolate, music and more.

Stone Mountain Village: "Never Say Never" Movie Showing, Georgia Military College Open House and Second Annual Back to School Bash 

When/Where: Friday, July 15, 11 a.m. for open house; Saturday, July 16 at 6:30 for the bash and sunset for the movie, Stone Mountain Village, Main Street, Stone Mountain. 

Why Go: The long-awaited opening of Georgia Military College in Stone Mountain was earlier this month, and GMC is hosting an open house Friday. Go check out the newly renovated building, next to the Sue Kellogg Library. The extension is offering free classes for 2011 graduates for the first fall term.

For the school bash, locals with elementary and middle school children are welcome to free school supplies Saturday, provided by donations through citizens, local businesses and civic organizations. Supplies will be given out until it runs out. Last on the Saturday agenda, the Justin Bieber movie, "Never Say Never," will play as part of the Movies on Main series on the Village's lawn.

Sound Decision at the Party Room

When/Where: Saturday, July 16, 10 p.m., , 5481 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain. 

Why Go: Cranking out the sounds of dubstep, hip-hop and reggae, Sound Decision has been around since the mid 1980s while under a different name in the Baltimore and Washington area. Now based in Atlanta and expanding to three members, Sounds Decision concentrates on their reggae side and will be performing at the Party Room with other guests such as Danger Zone and Gyallis International. Caribbean and Jamaican speciality food and drinks will be served. 

Pricing: $10 per person.

 

The Rockaholics ATL

When/Where: Thursday, July 14, 9 p.m., The Moonshadow Tavern, 3976 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker. 

Why Go: The classic rock, soul and blues band The Rockaholics ATL will play this Tucker tavern as part of their live music bill for the weekend. The Rockaholics ATL were recently voted as Atlanta's Best Blues Band on ReverbNation and have played at other venues such as Northside Tavern and Fat Matt's Rib Shack.

Chocolate Art at Mountain Park Library

When/Where: Thursday, July 14, 6 p.m., , 1210 Pounds Road, Lilburn. 

Why Go: As part of the Gwinnett County Library's Teen Summer Reading Program, Mountain Park Library has an edible art event to jumpstart the weekend. Teens will be able to practice their skills on piping in the kitchen by making edible art.

When/Where: Friday, July 15, 4 p.m.-8 p.m. for the market and 7 p.m. for the conference, Old Town Lilburn, Main Street, Lilburn. 

Why Go: Old Town is having its usual farmer's market, and this Friday is Night with WitzzlePro, a math game that will be taught by the Lilburn Woman's Club Education Department. Also happening in town is a writer's conference at the Little Shop of Arts and Antiques, which will be open to teens and adults. A number of local writers and poets will be reading and speaking at the event, which will take place Friday and Saturday. See Friday's details  and Saturday's details .

Guru Purnima Festival at BAPS

When/Where: Sunday, July 17, 3:30 p.m., , 460 Rockbridge Road, Lilburn. 

Why Go: Everyone is welcome to celebrate Guru Purnima, the festival to worship or pay respect to the Hindu spiritual guide Vyasa, who is believed to have been born on this day. Music chanting (known at Kirtan Bhakti), spiritual discourses and cultural programs will be performed during the festival. Mahaprasad (traditional Hindu food) will be served after the worship, too. 

Pricing: Free.

 

Magic 2012 Launch Party and Championship Qualifier

When/Where: Saturday, July 16, 11 a.m.- 2p.m. for qualifier and 6 p.m. for party, , 4805 Lawrenceville Highway, Lilburn. 

Why Go: Magic fans, bring your own decks to compete at the Gaming Pit to win $250 and automatically qualify for the TCQ Wizard World Championship Tournament in Chicago, where players will compete to win $75,000. Afterward, there will be a launch party where each player will be given six booster packs and compete in a field tournament for four rounds. The party will have multiple booster prizes to the winners. 

Pricing: Each event is $25 per person.

 

"Children of Eden"

When/Where: Friday-Saturday, July 15-July 16, 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 17, 2:30 p.m., New London Theatre, 2485 Main Street East, Snellville. 

Why Go: This weekend is the opener for New London Theatre's latest production, "Children of Eden." Involving Adam, Eve, Noah and the "Father," "Children of Eden" depicts the too-familiar conflicts between parents and children as seen in the chapter of Genesis. The performance is described as heartfelt, humorous and bittersweet.
