Woman's Club Brings Home State Awards

Awards won by the Stone Mountain Woman's Club at the state convention highlight some of the local community, state, national and international programs supported by the club throughout the year.

The Public Issues Community Service Program of the GFWC Stone Mountain Woman’s Club was recognized at the state convention of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs as the best in the state.

In addition to the silver award for Best Overall, the Public Issues CSP was recognized by the Georgia Automobile Dealers Association with a First Place Cash Award.

Under the leadership of Co-Chairwomen Marty Bryan and Barbara Luton, the Public Issues Community Service Program provides assistance to the Women’s Resource Center for Domestic Violence Prevention, works with Safe Kids to teach parents the correct use of child car seats and helps to keep parents informed of recalled items that might provide injury to children. Throughout the year, the Public Issues team coordinates gifts to the Battered Women’s Shelter, VA patients at the local VA Hospital and military personnel serving overseas.

The Tallulah Falls Committee again brought home the General Achievement Gavel for the club's support of the Tallulah Falls School, which is owned by the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs. Gloria Stevens and Sue Shoemaker serve as co-chairs of the Tallulah Falls Committee, and club member Elizabeth Wells serves as the State Tallulah Falls School chairwoman.  One of the fun activities provided for TFS students by the Stone Mountain Club is an annual hot dog supper and Tour of Southern Ghosts.

The awards program at the state convention recognizes clubs by membership size, and the GFWC Stone Mountain Woman’s Club is in the 51 and over membership group.  In addition to the First Place Award for Public Issues in the 51 and over category, the Art Community Service Program and the International Outreach Community Service Program won first place awards in the 51 and over category.  Home Life also won a first place cash award for the support of Dream House for Medically Fragile Children.

A portion of the art competition included student art and writing.  Three students recognized by the Art Community Service Program of the GFWC Stone Mountain Woman’s Club took home first place awards.  They are Jonathon Solis from Cross Keys High School for his art (also a cash award); Yasmine Brooks, Youth Writing Contest (cash award and overall winner in her category), and Lanigea Cross, Student Poetry Contest (also received a cash award).

These and other awards won by the GFWC Stone Mountain Woman’s Club at the State Convention held in Callaway Gardens this spring highlight some of the local community, state, national and international programs supported by the club throughout the year. Gail Rushing serves as president of the GFWC Stone Mountain Woman’s Club and Shari Carter, a member of the Stone Mountain Club, is president of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs.
