Proposed Memorial Drive Walmart: Retailer Asks to Defer Process Until January

Representatives for the retailer will meet with Pride Rings in Stone Mountain (PRISM) next week.

Walmart says it needs more time to meet with community and neighborhood groups about its before continuing with DeKalb County's review process.

The county planning commission agreed, recommending on Tuesday to defer the matter until January.

Memorial Drive residents' and business owners' concerns range from increased traffic to competition.

The retailer's plan is to return to the planning commission in early January, then to the Board of Commissioners' meeting a few weeks later, said Dan Hillman, representing Walmart.

Walmart representatives are scheduled to talk to the community group on November 10, 7 p.m. at

I am a homeowner in the Redan Hills subdivision that is located near the proposed site of the future Walmart on memorial drive. I am in full support of this. This community desperatly needs this Walmart. We have no department stores in this community that will be able to match the quality, affordability, customer service and appreciation as Walmart will. This area is filled with Mom and pop shops that are irrelevant, rude and have no sense of what customer service and appreciation is all about. Walmart will be a breath of fresh air into our community. Of course Business Owners will have a problem with it!!! Walmart will challenge you in the area of your customer service and appreciation skills!! And not to forget, you will have to watch your cost!!! HA! Finally, we will not be robbed anymore!!

Thanks for your comment, Mr. Adams. Reminder: The PRISM meeting with Walmart reps is scheduled for Nov. 10 at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church, 7 p.m. www.prismdekalb.org

I'm pretty sure this is a bad idea. Those mom and pop shops are what keeps the community together. If you feel you're being treated rudely, perhaps you should take a step back and look at yourself. You may be asking for rude treatment. and as far as pricing goes, sure Wall Mart is cheaper. But it has no soul. The overall quality of items found there are poor and its all made overseas. Allowing a Wal Mart to go up is just contributing to a bigger problem.
