Volunteer Opportunities: Paint School Hallways, Build Birdhouses on Hands on Atlanta Day

A weekly list of local volunteer and donation opportunities.

The following are local volunteer opportunities and donation needs:

Help Needed - Volunteers

1. Hands On Atlanta Day is this Saturday, Oct. 6. Here are some schools and organizations in Stone Mountain and Lithonia that could use some help that day (click on the links below for information on signing up):

Allgood Elementary, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

  • Hands On Atlanta Day Volunteer activity: painting the fourth grade hallway and landscaping the school.
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Court ordered volunteers are not permitted. This project site is wheelchair accessible.

Woodridge Elementary, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

  • Hands On Atlanta Day volunteer activity: painting hallways and landscaping
  • Volunteers must be at least 17 years of age with adult supervision. Court ordered volunteers are not permitted. This project site is wheelchair accessible.

Stephenson Middle, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

  • Hands On Atlanta Day volunteer activity: sprucing up the school's interior courtyard gardens, repainting classroom walls and school benches.
  • Volunteers much be at least 8 years of age with adult supervision. Court ordered volunteers are not permitted. This project is wheelchair accessible.

Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

  • Hands On Atlanta Day volunteer activity: building bird houses and picnic tables and mulching trails.
  • Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age with adult supervision. Court ordered volunteers are permitted. This project site is not wheelchair accessible.

2. Atlanta Animal Rescue Friends (AARF) has several upcoming events where volunteers are needed, including providing information about its programs at Southern Softpaw League games in Jonesboro this Saturday, Oct., 6, from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.; volunteering at its "Catoberfest" adoption day on Sunday, Oct. 7,Β  from 12:30-3:30 p.m., and more.

Help Needed - Donations

Here are some examples of how donations can help at Refugee Family Services, as explained on RFS's website:

  • $8 can buy an English dictionary for a refugee mom;
  • $50 buys an ESL Kit for a refugee woman learning English through Refugee Family Services' Family Literacy Program
  • $100 provides mentoring, life skills development and leadership education to a refugee high school girl through the Young Women’s Leadership Program.
