Get Out: A Look at What to Do This Weekend

Ninja Martial Arts

When/Where: Saturday, June 25, 2 p.m.-3 p.m., Stone Mountain-Sue Kellogg Public Library, 952 Leon Street, Stone Mountain. 

Why Go: Aimed at ages 13 to 17, Master Anthony Chung will teach young adults about the history of the ninja. As the instructor of the course, Chung will also give hands-on training with instruments such as throwing stars.

B. Justice Canvas to Runway Fashion Extravaganza

When/Where: Sunday, June 26, 5:30 p.m., Lions of Judah Conference Center, 6202 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain. 

Why Go: B. Justice, a New York fashion designer known for his sophisticated Body of Conscious Collection for men and women, brings his fashion to Stone Mountain with a runway show (featuring Justice Unlimited models), dancing, music and food.

CD Party with Sammy Blue

When/where: Village Corner German Restaurant, Saturday, June 25, 7:30 p.m., on the deck (weather permitting).

Why go: Enjoy some of the newest releases from Sammy, the prince of blues. Laura Connely will be opening.

Dinner for Kidney Transplant Candidate Horace O'Kelly

When/where: Village Corner German Restaurant, Sunday, June 26, 3 p.m.

Why go: Enjoy a good meal for a good cause. Horace O'Kelly has been on dialysis for more than nine years and is awaiting a kidney transplant. The dinner will help fund the transplant.

Old Town Happenings: Lilburn Idol and A Taste of Mystery

When/Where: For Lilburn Idol, Friday, June 24, 7 p.m., Lilburn City Park, 76 Main Street, Lilburn; For A Taste of Mystery, Saturday, June 25, 1-4 p.m., 94 Main Street, Lilburn. 

Why Go: The eighth annual Lilburn Idol auditions may be over, but the competitions are just starting. Watch the finalists sing to their hearts' content in the season's first of three competitions in Lilburn Idol I. Come back to Old Town the next day for A Taste of Mystery, where three metro-Atlanta authors will talk about their two murder-mystery novels and one cookbook that they've written together, under the name of Georgia Adams. The series is called The LitChix, and more can be read about the novels here

 

Music for Missions Jazz Concert

When/Where: Sunday, June 26, 7 p.m., Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church, 3142 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker. 

Why Go: The Music for Missions concert series continues at Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church in Tucker with pianist and composer Andrew Fazackerley, jazz vocalist Tommie Macon, and percussionist Emrah Kotan. Music for Missions is a 12-year project of the church's United Methodist Men and will present Fazackerly, who's performed all around the metro Atlanta area including The Village Corner German Restaurant and Bakery in Stone Mountain, in its 189th concert. 

Pricing: Free, but donations are requested for charities and missions. 

 

WinGs Yard Sale

When/Where: Saturday, June 25, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Berkmar United Methodist Church, 675 Pleasant Hill Road, Lilburn. 

Why Go: Berkmar United Methodist Church has gotten its church-goers and neighbors to clean out their closets, basements and attics to sell their unused items in the church's yard sale this weekend. All the proceeds will go to the general budget of the church. 

 

Victoria Miguel-Joseph Book Signing

When/Where: Saturday, June 25, noon-2 p.m., Borders Books & Music, 1929 Scenic HIghway, Snellville. 

Why Go: Snellville author Victoria Miguel-Joseph will sign and talk about her first published novel, "When Never Comes Again," a romantic-suspense story about a woman who goes through an ordeal of events: She witnesses her brother's death, her husband admits to adultery, and her child is kidnapped. In the middle of it all, though, she does find love. 

Pricing: Free. 

 

Backyard Nature Class: Attracting Butterflies

When/Where: Saturday, June 25, 1 p.m., 2316 Main Street Suite D, Tucker. 

Why Go: Learn how to make butterflies flock to your gardens by attending this class with master gardener Dawn Hines as instructor. A tour of the Tucker Butterfly Garden is available for attendees, too. 

Pricing: Free, but registration is requested since class size is limited. Call 404-474-7072 to register or for more information. 

 

Charity Knitting 

When/Where: Saturday, June 25, 1 p.m.-3 p.m., Centerville Community Center, 3025 Bethany Church Road, Snellville. 

Why Go: Knitters, unite! Knit in the Centerville Community Center this Saturday to meet other crafty equals and create projects for Eastside and Gwinnett medical centers, Emory Cancer Center and the military.
