Five Things to Know Today, July 5

Millage rates are on Stone Mountain city council's agenda tonight, rain is in the forecast, and Georgia Military College opens its doors in the village, offering free tuition for recent grads.

Happy fifth of July! Oh, wait. Well, here are some things to know as you head into a perfectly normal Tuesday.

The weather: There's a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms, mainly after 8 a.m. and a 40 percent chance tonight. The high will be about 93 degrees.

Free tuition for 2011 grads: Georgia Military College is opening its doors in downtown Stone Mountain today and is accepting applications. The first fall quarter, which starts Aug. 8, is tuition-free for 2011 high school graduates who apply for state and federal aid, regardless of whether they receive the aid. Click here for more information.

Millage rates: Stone Mountain city council will vote tonight on an ordinance that would raise millage rates in order to keep property taxes unchanged after DeKalb County recently lowered assessments on properties.

At the library: See "Karate Kid" at Sue Kellogg's Terrific Tuesday Cinema (for families) in the village at 2 p.m. At the Redan-Trotti branch, it's REDA Teen Tuesday with a movie for ages 13-17 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Call the library at 770-482-3821 for the movie title.
