Five Things to Know Today, August 8

It's back-to-school day.

Welcome to Monday, a new week and a new school year. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: It'll be party sunny, with a high of about 93 degrees. There's a 30 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon. The low tonight will be about 75 degrees.

Heavier commute: Not only DeKalb, Gwinnett and Atlanta city schools have their first day of school today. Joining them are Barrow, Clarke, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Griffin-Spalding, Hall, Lamar and Rabun counties and Commerce and Gainesville city schools. A number of county and city schools started last week.

The pretrial hearing of John Russell Carver, the man accused of raping, beating and robbing a woman at St. Timothy United Methodist Church earlier this year, will be held today. Check Stone Mountain Patch later for the story.
