Five Things to Know Today, August 23

Learn something new every day.

Tuesday brings the second day of the work week and five new things to know:

The weather: Keep those sweat towels handy for wiping your brow. High of 93, winds east northeast at 10 mph; low, 66 tonight.

Deal of the day: Need to spruce up your home decor with a few paintings or sketches? If you’re in the neighborhood of the Friends of Disabled Adults thrift store -- 4900 Lewis Road, Stone Mountain, 30083 -- you’re in luck: this week’s special is 25 percent off framed artwork.

Today in Georgia history: On this day in 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman issued Special Field Order 59. According to information from the Georgia Historical Society, this prohibitive order kept Sherman’s forces “from trading with Georgia merchants except for items needed by Union troops, and setting the conditions under which Union quartermasters could obtain what they needed.”

Falling gas prices: The average price for gas in Georgia is $3.489 according to Georgia Gas Prices; the national average is $3.585.

Later today on Patch: Check back in today to take a look at crime statistics for the City of Stone Mountain.
