DeKalb Police Chief O'Brien Retiring

William O'Brien, who graduated from Redan High School, took the helm in 2010.

DeKalb County Chief of Police William O'Brien, a 1981 graduate of Redan High School in Stone Mountain, is retiring.

Burke Brennan, chief communications officer for DeKalb County, said O'Brien is now using vacation time, which was more than he had originally calculated when he wrote his retirement letter. O’Brien is on the payroll as Police Chief until Nov 30.

According to DeKalb County's website, O'Brien has been with the DeKalb County Police Department for more than 24 years, working in a range of assignments, such as Homicide, Burglary, and Community Oriented Policing. He was named to the top spot in the department in 2010.

An interim successor will be named until a permanent replacement is found, Brennan said.

The DeKalb County Chief of Police position is listed on DeKalb County's website.
