Georgia Senators James, Henson Recognize Organization on Disabilities Day

Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC), a non-profit organization providing over $10 million annually in durable medical equipment (DME) and supplies to the disabled community, was recognized by the Georgia State Senate in a resolution read on the Senate floor on Thursday, 20 February. Georgia State Senators Donzella James (D-Atlanta) and Steve Henson (D-Tucker) sponsored the resolution commending FODAC on its “efforts in improving the quality of life of Georgians with disabilities.”

Senate Resolution 826 was read in the Senate chamber in February on Georgia Disabilities Day, an annual event sponsored by Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities. The event promotes access, opportunity and meaningful community living for all Georgians, including people with disabilities and their families. Citizens with and without disabilities gathered on the steps of the State Capitol to join advocates and meet with state legislators to make their voices heard.

“Seeing FODAC service the needs of our community really warms my heart,” said Senator James, who serves Georgia District 35, including Atlanta. “During a recent family health crisis, I got first-hand experience with the challenges faced by the mobility-impaired. Without proper equipment, such as power chairs, walkers and shower benches, or services, such as vehicle and home modifications, many disabled are unable to work, go to school or even take care of themselves. By supplying basic equipment and services to the disabled community, often at little to no cost to the recipient, FODAC enables a more independent lifestyle and the opportunity to be a more active contributor to the community.”

“Without FODAC’s support, many people with mobility or developmental disabilities would lead isolated lives with minimum opportunities for education and employment,” stated Senator Henson, who serves Georgia District 41, including Tucker. “The folks at FODAC give these people a chance to be more independent and add value to the community.”

“FODAC’s main goal is to enhance the quality of life for people of all ages who have any type of illness or physical disability,” said Chris Brand, president and CEO of FODAC. “This recognition by Senators James and Henson and the Georgia State Senate further validates our mission and is a testament to the tangible value and benefit we provide to the entire community. Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) helps people with injuries and disabilities of all ages regain their mobility, independence and quality of life. The non-profit organization provides more than $10 million annually in refurbished home medical equipment (HME) and home modifications in Georgia and across the United States, all at little or no cost to the recipients. A pioneer in re-use, FODAC keeps 200 tons of materials out of landfills each year by refurbishing and reissuing over 400 HME items every month, and is recognized nationally for best practices.
