Stephenson Aligned in Expanded Region 6-AAAAA for 2014

GHSA realignment plan: Arabia Mountain would move into new region with Lithonia, Redan and Stone Mountain.

The new region realignment plan released by the Georgia High School Association doesn't include many changes for Stone Mountain-area schools individually, but the regions in which they play may be drastically different starting next year.

The most notable change impacts Arabia Mountain, which will move down from Class 5A to Class 4A. Arabia Mountain is slated to compete in Region 6-AAAA, where Stone Mountain, Redan and Stone Mountain would remain in 2014-16. Region 6-AAAA would shrink from 12 teams to 9:

Region 6-AAAA (proposed)

  • Arabia Mountain
  • Chamblee
  • Columbia
  • Cross Keys
  • Lithonia
  • Marist
  • Redan
  • St. Pius
  • Stone Mountain

In the proposal, Stephenson would remain in Class 5A and stay in Region 6, but the region will expand from 11 teams to 17:

Region 6-AAAAA (proposed)
Subregion A
  • Clarkston
  • Drew
  • Dunwoody
  • Druid Hills
  • Forest Park
  • M.L. King
  • Miller Grove
  • SW DeKalb
  • Stephenson

Subregion B
  • Dutchtown
  • Luella
  • Morrow
  • Mundy's Mill
  • Ola
  • Stockbridge
  • Union Grove
  • Woodland, Henry

GHSA's plan is tentative until after schools are allowed to appeal their placements. Final region alignments are due in January.
