The Colony: New Owner Plans Affordable Senior Housing
Elul LLC of Hallandale, Florida wants to turn the property from eyesore to "wonderful...senior residence," a company account manager told Patch.
The new owner of The Colony Apartment complex wants to turn the property into housing for people ages 55 and up, complete with amenities.
Elul LLC plans to "make it a wonderful, European, senior residence for 55 and up," said Sharon Cohen, account manager with the company in Hallandale, Florida.
"The look is going to change," Cohen said. A golf course, greenery, amenities and renovated town homes are in the works, she said, but there are no details just yet on things such as number of housing units or price ("It's going to be affordable," Cohen said.)
She also said there will be security, both during the renovations and when the work is complete. "I know how important it is to have a secure place, and that it's being watched," she said. "It's going to be a very safe place."

The site is undergoing engineering work and renovations are expected to begin before year's end.
When told of Elul's plans, Jan Dunaway, longtime local resident and member of the community group Pride Rings in Stone Mountain (PRISM) said, "It's a wait and see. I would not have an issue if it really is good senior housing."
"It's time to move forward in getting that cleaned up finally," she said.
The Colony was shuttered in August 2011. It had been a crime scene, and since its closing, a number of fires have taken place there. The crime, dilapidated units, blazes and easy accessibility from the street had been a concern of nearby residents for years.
There is now a fence surrounding the property as Elul does its work.

Hallelujah! This is just the kind of thing I believe this community needs....focusing more on the "established" residents than the poor and homeless flooding our area. What was once "the" place to live has become frightful to most, but it can be what it once was and more if only merchants and large retailers will take interest. Now that Wal-Mart is coming in, hopefully other respected retailers will follow-suit.

ITA @Marguerite you hit the nail on the head!!! This sounds like a wonderful idea glad to know their plans for the property. Now if we could get the good folks at Costco warehouse to come on this side of town I'd be a happy camper not to mention get Whole Foods and/or Trader Joe's. Then I would not have to travel so far to other communities it could all be right here.

People over 55 golf? I like the fact that the property will finally get some renovations. Hopefully, it's nice like the senior facility off West Park Place behind the old Super Target.

If you want to really know go to county and look at approved plans and what they permits are for. I have been working ther and no golf course or 55 what i was told. we are doing basic remodels. go see plans and look at this with permit. Elul construction hires all of us and pays us to do work.
