The former grocery store is going through a complete demolition of the interior. The opening date is slated for Jan 5.
DeMartinis said the new club will have more than 100 pieces of cardiovascular equipment. There will be a 30-minute workout area, massage beds, a massage chair and more. There has been an investment of $750,000 in workout equipment alone.
The Stone Mountain location will be the third in metro Atlanta for Planet Fitness; a fourth is under construction on Buford Highway in Atlanta.
Planet Fitness opened up 18 months ago on Wesley Chapel, in a space that was a former Walmart. It is located next to Everest Institute.
“I love this area. I think the people down here are great to work with,” DeMartinis said.
Planet Fitness isn't the only gym to come to the Stone Mountain-Lithonia area. L.A. Fitness is building two facilities - at Covington Highway and Panola Road and in Stone Mountain in Gwinnett County.
Why are fitness centers popping up? DeMartinis said more people are learning about obesity and its effects, and that their health is "at the forefront."
"There’s a lot more awareness," he said. "Fitness is booming."
