Pizza Delivery Man Pursued Robbery Suspects To Redan Middle
There was one arrest made following the incident on Sept. 14, according to a DeKalb County police report.
When a delivery man was robbed by the people who called in an order for pizzas and chicken wings, he decided to take matters into his own hands and pursue the suspects to Redan Middle School, even after one of them brandished a gun.
According to the DeKalb County police report, the incident on Friday, Sept. 14 began when the employee from the Pizza Hut at 1130 S. Hairston Rd. in unincorporated Stone Mountain delivered $35 worth of take-out at 4:15 p.m. to a home on 5700 block of Dorian Ct., a vacant residence in unincorporated Lithonia.
The employee/victim met the first suspect outside the front door and handed him the food. The suspect told the delivery man he was going to get the money, and instructed him to wait outside.
Th delivery man walked to the front door and saw a second suspect standing near the rear door holding a handgun. A third suspect was holding a large wooden stick, and a fourth suspect was standing near the others, the report states.
The first suspect handed the pizzas to the second, then all four fled on foot through the back door.
The Pizza Hut worker ran after the males, who ranged in age from 16 to 17 according to the report, and was able to grab the first suspect by the shirt as he climbed over a fence.
That's when suspect No. 2 showed the worker a black handgun at his waistline and told him to let the other suspect go. The delivery man backed off, fearing getting hurt, according to the incident report.
But he wasn't quite finished with the alleged thieves, who were heading toward Redan Middle School at 1775 Young Rd.
The victim followed them in his car, then got out and chased after them on foot again.
Football practice was going on as the suspects ran on the right side of the school building; suspect No. 2, holding the pizzas, stopped to speak with someone, whom a school coach called out to.
The suspect dropped the pizzas, then said to the delivery man, "Bro, you don't want this" while again showing the handgun at his waistline.
The Pizza Hut employee contacted the school resource officer about the incident. The suspects ran across the school's field as the football team practiced.
Around 5:40 p.m., the DeKalb police officer who responded to the call, along with the delivery man/victim, were on their way to the vacant home on Dorian Court when they spotted the first suspect at another home on the same street with three black males.
The delivery man pointed out the suspect for the officer, who drew his taser and pointed it at him. The officer instructed the suspect not to move and to put his hands behind his back, which he did, the report states.
The suspect, who was put in handcuffs and detained, told police that before the incident occured, he was hanging out with friends who live on Dorian Court. Then a friend called to tell him they were going to commit a robbery, according to the report.
The officer went to the crime scene at the vacant house, where he found a wooden stick lying on the kitchen floor. The stick was put into evidence.
The suspect was charged with robbery and taken to DeKalb County Jail.
