Updated for 2012: Last Minute Gift Ideas
Great suggestions that will help you get the job done quickly at local establishments, even last minute.
We know.
You said you weren’t going to wait until the last minute to finish your Christmas gift list. But here you are, stressing your brain on what to get at the last minute while not looking like you waited until the last minute.
Patch can help. We’ve compiled a list of five last-minute gift ideas (with some links to local retailers and specialty shops, too) that can help you fill out your list.
So, take a deep breath and consider the following:
Beat the Crowds: Places such as ART Station have a selection of fun and unique gifts. While you're in Stone Mountain Village, walk around and check out other art galleries and gift shops for one-of-a-kind items, from jewelry to portraits.
If you want to hit the Mall at Stonecrest, try getting there as soon as they open to avoid the huge throngs of other procrastinators. Stonecrest Mall is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 23, 2012) and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2012).
If you're trying to avoid the mall but still want a variety of gifts, a quick trip to a local drug store, like a local CVS (N. Hairston Rd., for example) or Walgreens (5435 Five Forks Trickum Rd., Stone Mountain) can be fruitful. You should expect a surprisingly good gift selection.
Get Charitable: Here's a thoughtful gift that assures you’ll get a great holiday hug.
Check out the holiday wish lists (and other long-term needs) of Stone Mountain and Lithonia non-profit organizations.
Make a cash or other donation (such as food or clothing) to the charity in the gift recipient’s name and include that information in a card.
It’s Gift Card Time: OK, you may not really want to give a gift card, but it’s easy and will be appreciated.
Most pharmacies and grocery stores (like Kroger and Publix) have a large selection of gifts cars from well-known retail and online stores. Locally, stop in at a favorite restaurant and inquire about a gift card. Many locally owned eateries will gladly accommodate a request for a gift card.
A Spirited Gift Basket: A bottle of wine (check out Smoke Rise Bottle Shoppe's selection) with a variety of cheeses, crackers and other goodies (such as chocolate and candies) can be a tasteful gift and pretty easy to put together in a short time. The Village Corner German Restaurant and Bakery has lots of sweet goodies that would be appropriate for a gift basket.
Another idea: package a movie DVD or Blue Ray disk with popcorn, candies and beverage for a stay-at-home movie night gift basket.
Several grocery stores ((Kroger and Publix) carry popular DVDs, you can pick up a lovely basket from a discount retailer such Target at 8109 Mall Pkwy. in Lithonia or from a craft store such as Hobby Lobby (open Christmas Eve).
If you want to treat someone to a night at the movies, pick up a gift card for AMC Stonecrest 16, from the theater itself or from Kroger's gift card area, for example.
Gadgets! Who doesn’t like gadgets? Flashlights, tool kits for the car, earbuds, charging stations for mobile devices, multi-tools, weather stations, portable DVD players are just a few ideas.
Try stores such as Auto Zone, at 349 Stone Mountain Lithonia Road or at 6629 Covington Highway in Lithonia for a car tool kit; Radio Shack at 5445 Fairington Rd. #104 for electronic gifts.
