Gwinnett PD: Walmart Robbery and Shooting Were Separate Incidents
One man was robbed, another shot in the incidents early Saturday morning at the Rockbridge Road supercenter.
Two separate incidents -- a robbery and a shooting -- happened at the Rockbridge Road Walmart early Saturday morning (Jan. 12) in unincorporated Stone Mountain, Gwinnett County police say.
According to GCPD, the first victim arrived at the store in unincorporated Stone Mountain at about 2:50 a.m. After the 20-year-old pulled into a parking space near the main entrance to the store, he walked toward the building and was approached by two black male suspects, police say.
One suspect brandished a handgun and demanded the victim’s keys and wallet. After getting the keys, the suspect went to the victim’s car, a 2010 Honda Fit. He started it and remained inside, according to police.
Police say before the robbery, the second victim, 35, who is an employee of Walmart, arrived in the parking lot and waited in his car for his shift to start.
According to GCPD:
As the second victim emerged from his vehicle he saw the first victim in a conversation with one of the suspects. He did not see a gun. The second victim only speaks Albanian, and did not understand what was occurring. The second victim passed close to the other two men, and the suspect addressed him. The second victim, not understanding, continued toward the entrance. As the second victim continued toward the entrance of Wal-Mart, the second suspect fired one shot, striking the second victim in the thigh. At that point, both victims ran into the Wal-Mart, and the second suspect ran to the waiting vehicle. The suspects fled the scene at a high rate of speed in the first victim’s stolen Honda Fit. Once inside, the victims reported the incident. The shooting victim was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. His injury is considered non-life threatening.
After Gwinnett detectives arrived and reviewed security footage, they determined that the suspects had arrived in a vehicle, stolen in an Atlanta carjacking, which was left at the scene.
Gwinnett detectives and Atlanta Police detectives have worked together, according to the release. The stolen Honda Fit was found by Atlanta police Sundat (Jan. 13) evening. Both stolen vehicles have been recovered for processing, say police.
GCPD reports that a handgun that matches the description of the weapon used in the shooting was recovered in the Honda Fit.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (404) 557-TIPS (8477) or Gwinnett Police detectives at 770-513-5300.
At this point in the investigation, we do not have a good description of the suspects. The video from Wal-Mart is available, but is too large to email.
